Today..

I cut myself with the blade of the microtome, just to see how sharp it was.
Yeah right.
By accident of course, because i was dusting the wax flakes away, then the next moment, i saw my finger bleeding. Thank god it wasn't a deep cut, though it didnt stop bleeding till 15mins later.
I've so many encounters where i accidentally brushed my fingers against the blade, but only the epidermis was sorta cut, and thus, no bleeding.

And for the uninitiated, you could click on this
to find out what a microtome is. In short, it is a manual machine used to section tissues as thin as 4 microns on average.

And on a lighter note, i'll be going to HSA to observe a day of Post Mortem.
So, pls wish me luck. I hope i don't faint.

Two stubborn people spells disaster

can't believe i actually argued with bud over the dumbest thing ever.
We were debating about the issue of burning fats/losing weight

My stand: Cardio is the best way to burn fats
His stand: Lifting weights is the best way to burn fats

My stand: Cardio boosts the metabolism
His stand: Lifting weight boosts the metabolism,
and cardio decreases the metabolism

Don't we always say, if you wanna lose weight, go jog, go swim, do aerobics etc. That is cardio, and it will reduce ther fat percentage in your body. Then i have a moron like him telling me lifting weight is the best way to burn fats. Yeah right. In his silly own world. Lifting weights is more like sculpting, toning, to look leaner. I'm not saying lifting weight won't burn fats. You'll probably burn fats marginally (which is why you look toner), as compared to cardio. You get my drift? Lifting weights will increase muscle mass, and we all know that muscle weighs more than fats. So tell me, how the hell do you lose weight? Of course, for cardio, you probably don't gain as much muscles, which is why the net loss of weight is more than stupid weight lifting.

Then, the most ridiculous idea- Lifting weight can boost your metabolism? What rubbish is this. Then tell me, why issit that all the body builders look like a piece of lard after they stopped training? They wobble like a piece of agar agar. Gross. And how issit possible for your metabolism to decrease by cardio. The fact that you burn fats and lose weight through cardio exercises is because cardio boosts metabolism. metabolism=using more energy in your body, hence, leaving you with little energy reserves to be stored as fats.

I know im not like some stupid health consultant. But hey, with some fundamental Physiology i've studied, and the copious amount of health magazines i've read, i think i definitely know more than him. (not that i'm trying to act smart). I've also read alot of articles refutting some controversies etc, thats why i try to maintain a neutral stand. I give him credits for the 'lifting weights can burn fats' bit. But it does not burn alot.

These are some things ppl should know. They should stop talking so much cock.

I think i'm PMSing. I don't sound very polite in this post.

Boston - Augustana

in the light of the sun, is there anyone? oh it has begun...
oh dear you look so lost, eyes are red and tears are shed,
this world you must've crossed...you said...

you don't know me, you don't even care,
you don't know me, you don't wear my chains...

essential and appealed, carry all your thoughts across
an open field,
when flowers gaze at you...they're not the only ones who cry
when they see you
you said...

you don't know me, you don't even care,
you don't know me, you don't wear my chains...

she said I think I'll go to Boston...
I think I'll start a new life,
I think I'll start it over, where no one knows my name,
I'll get out of California, I'm tired of the weather,
I think I'll get a lover and fly em out to Spain...
I think I'll go to Boston,
I think that I'm just tired
I think I need a new tow, to leave this all behind...
I think I need a sunrise, I'm tired of the sunset,
I hear it's nice in the summer, some snow would be nice...
Boston...where no one knows my name...

Fwah

Another week has gone by so quickly. Yesterday seems like Monday. I wonder why the days go by so swiftly, without even me realising it.

I've got quite a bit to do over the weekends. Pretty excited about them.
Probably a movie tmr. Sorry les, couldn't make it tmr, but thanks for putting me on the guest list nonetheless.
Some dinner at the NUS guild house. Not that i'm an alumni member, my friend is though, and i'm invited. Heh.
Might bake again this Sunday. Whee
Stupid old man bud striked 4d. Honestly, how many ard our age would go buy 4d. Soccer bets i can understand, but 4d???? Lao ah pek! And i'm obviously in for a treat tmr. hur. It's funny how he told me like my comments had some impact on him. I'm not even talking about a hurtful comment or anything. But once in a while, i'll just irritate the hell out of him, and tell him how lame and corny he is. And he told me, how that made him inferior and self conscious? Huhhh.

Aiyah, whatever it is, no one should take me seriously, unless i tell you "i'm serious'. If not, take all my comments with a pinch of salt.

I think i talk too much.

Quote

" Good love you can get over in 2 months but GREAT love... great love changes your life... However, when the door closes on great love, you can never get it back because there is too much hurt"

"Win a date with Tad Hamilton"

Deep Blue Something

You'll say, we've got nothing in common
No common ground to start from
And we're falling apart
You'll say, the world has come between us
Our lives have come between us
Still I know you just don't care

And I said, "what about 'Breakfast at Tiffany's?'"
She said, "I think I remember the film
And as I recall, i think, we both kind of liked it"
And I said, "well that's, one thing we've got"

I see you, the only one who knew me
And now your eyes see through me
I guess I was wrong
So what now, it's plain to see we're over
And I hate when things are over
When so much is left undone

And I said, "what about 'Breakfast at Tiffany's?'"
She said, "I think I, remember the film
And, as I recall, I think, we both kind of liked it"
And I said, "well that's, one thing we gots"

You'll say, that we've got nothing in common
No common ground to start from
And we're falling apart
You'll say the world has come between us
Our lives have come between us
Still I know you just don't care

And I said, "what about 'Breakfast at Tiffany's?'"
She said, "I think I, remember that film
And, as I recall, I think, we both kind of liked it"
And I said, "well that's, one thing we gots"

Muffins Galore

I woke up at 830am today, because i couldnt sleep anymore. Decided to bake something (from scratch okay!) No muffin mixes were used. I baked choc chip muffins, and nutella swirl muffins. Thanks to cheryl's recommendation. You could get the recipe here

I also baked scones (for the second time), turned out just as bad as the first. I don't know why they turned out so damn hard, and raw inside. Gross. I'm gonna throw them away. But, i think its the flour that i used.

A little reflection

Work has left me with little time to do reflections, to think about my own life. The only constant reminder i have from work is that life is very precarious.

I haven given much thoughts about my own personal life. What i want, where i stand and stuff like that, until today. I was asking myself, whether i could commit to one person like before. This was indeed a daunting question, that i couldn't bring myself to say 'yes' without any hesitation. This really isn't the old me i suppose. As of now, it's strange how i don't need anyone in my life. To me, the game of love seems a little tougher now. Not sure how you play it, but again, i'm always counting myself out. A good friend told me i should open my options, and not give up. Well, this may sound really (kinda) bad, but i think i'm turning into an Evan. Haha. Ppl who know her would know what i mean. She tries all ways to back out of relationships, and she's pretty much being happy single. Heh. We've lived up to the convent spirits (read: being nuns)

I don't know. Maybe i enjoy hanging out with different ppl, the fun of meeting new ppl, and not be stuck with one soul. I'm afraid this time, i would have to be the one who break hearts. I always believed in karma, especially when it comes to relationships. I'm glad i'm enjoying good karma now. I've got my heart broken, and now, i have the superior 'power' to break hearts, not something i would enjoy doing. Sigh. Who likes getting their hearts broken anyway? Back to good karma. I've met many ppl with so much to offer. It really gave me an entirely new perspective about dating and getting attached. No more college puppy love. We're talking about maturity and adulthood here. No more acts of foolishness like texting each other "what are you doing now?" every single day. That's just plain dumb if you ask me. It is about having good company, good dinner, nice stroll in the parks and good coffee/magaritas. And it could also be about going on vacations together. That's because you're financially capable of doing all that, you're not relaying on your folks for allowance. You see the difference?

The thing about experiencing this whole greener pasture thing kinda makes me a person who's hard to please. For i know that there's always a better catch out there, which is obviously why i don't see a need to settle down, even if the current catch is a fairly good one. That's just me and my mentality.
Because i haven't seen enough of the world yet.

On a lighter note, Dom passed his driving test on first attempt with only 6 demerit points. Damn fuckin' good if you ask me. And if you think his driving centre is anywhere but Ubi, hur. You're wrong. With the tester telling him he's a fast learner, and him, spending only 1.6K for the entire course, makes me realised how shitty a driver i am. The moron who took her test 4 times, scoring 18 points on her final attempt, spent close to 3k on the course, had someone parked for her the first time she drove out, pisses the hell out of all the drivers on the road, getting honked at billions of times. What else? I need to brush up on my driving!

Today, i went SimLim with Tim with the intention of getting a TV tube/transmitter, and the iPod earphones. Stupid Jeevan told me it costs $2 per pair. what nonsense. For one, i couldn't even find a shop that sells white earphones. And this stupid other shop tried to sell me an ipod earphones for $39 without a box. And the man still had the audacity to tell me its original. Grr. In the quest of looking for the earphones, i totally forgot about my TV tuner thing until i came out of my shower. What stupid luck. I'm sure i would've bought that if i remembered. But, i bought a pair of earrings again to add on to the collection. The earring count now stands at 42.

Then we walked around Bugis (which was insanely packed), i had sweaty bodies brushing against me at the market. EEYEW. And we had Taiwanese Bubble Tea. Damn starch balls. It was good nonetheless.

Who says customer service in Australia is always good?

Was talking to Mike online just now, before he went to shower. He told me a hilarious incident

Uncle Mike says:
the guy accused me of trying to get an extra piece of chicken
Uncle Mike says:
i got a meal, but the piece of chicken was absent
Uncle Mike says:
i know youre thinking so whats the big deal
Uncle Mike says:
a piece of chicken at cost to KFC would be ...50 cents? not even that?
Uncle Mike says:
but the guy accuses me of eating it within 5 minutes and trying to claim another one
saving grace says:
HUH. haha what the fuck?
Uncle Mike says:
i told him the 5 minutes was because i had to wait in line for him to finish serving other customers before me
saving grace says:
so what did you do?
Uncle Mike says:
and he goes fine i'll look it up on the computer then
Uncle Mike says:
and he prints a receipt out
Uncle Mike says:
but then he looked at it and scrunches it up and throws it in the bin before he shows me
Uncle Mike says:
cauz he knows it was within 5 minutes and as soon as i sat down i noticed, i would have walked back straight away
Uncle Mike says:
then he looks at the box closely and notices a crumb next to a wrapped burger
Uncle Mike says:
and he goes to me thats where the chicken was
Uncle Mike says:
like bull fuckin shit!
Uncle Mike says:
the crumb was from the chicken fillet in the burger!
Uncle Mike says:
i've never heard of such crap before
saving grace says:
that is the most ridiculous thing i've heard
Uncle Mike says:
like how hard can it be
saving grace says:
haha, but pretty funny though.
saving grace says:
so why cant he just give you YOUR chicken
Uncle Mike says:
yeh its funy now
saving grace says:
is he the manager?
Uncle Mike says:
but at the time i was pissed!
Uncle Mike says:
he writes his name down and tells me to complain to the customer hotline
Uncle Mike says:
and im like i dont want to complain about 1 missing piece of chicken
Uncle Mike says:
like wtf am i to do. ask the hotline to send me a piece of chicken!??!
Uncle Mike says:
i ask for the manager, and he tells me he's the manager
saving grace says:
HAHAHAHAH
Uncle Mike says:
so i walk away in the end, but i sent KFC an email cauz the hotline is now closed.
Uncle Mike says:
this isnt about the chicken anymore
saving grace says:
hm...but isnt the customer ALWAYS right
Uncle Mike says:
its the way the guy dealt with the situation that was offensive. and he accuses me of conciously eating the chicken within 5 minutes only to go back to him and get another extra one.
Uncle Mike says:
yeh im right this time. regardless of customer/employee relations

pfft

i hate waking up in the morning, to find that there's no milk in the fridge to go with my cereals!
it's worse than having a bad hair day if you ask me.

No thanks to my recent weight gain (after not jogging for 3 weeks, due to a painful heel. KNN)
So, i think i have another 2 more months to really go jian fei, before i take my family portrait.
My mom says must take after the hungry ghost festival, for some superstitious reasons. Don't ask me what it is

So to the gym near my house...

Here i come!!

work woes

In 2 days time, i'm officially a graduate

Gown (checked)
Camera (checked)
Stage photo (unchecked)
Plaque (unchecked)
Family portrait (unchecked)

I've been sighing way too much lately.
I'm getting a little stressed at work. Stressed over minor mistakes.
Like, missing out one slide while packing or having to re-section my specimens, because it wasn't all that well cut. I've been suffering from some short term memory or sort. Ask me what i did at work yesterday, or what speciemens i handled, i swear i can't rem a shit. This is so nerve wrecking.
Working in the lab has its pros and cons.
The #1 rule of thumb is, there is no room for errors. Yes i know. Each time i do something, i'm overwhelmed with paranoia, like..pls double check, make sure there's no mix up (or else, face the dreaded consequences after the prognosis) Then there's also the quality of our fruit of labour. Everything has to be in tip top quality. It's no wonder why i feel quite stressed sometime. It's a different sorta stress altogether. Ppl get stressed over deadlines for their project or presentation. I wouldn't say i dont' have a deadline. in fact, i do, every day is a deadline, things have to be completed by the end of the day no matter what.

Like today, one of the pathologists complained that he saw a section of a polyp on an appendix section. And he was pretty confused, then it turned out that, while i was sectioning the appendix (btw, sectioning is not an easy feat, try cutting something at 4 microns with a microtome!), then i think i accidentally jabbed the block (first time cutting mah!), so in the end, had to melt the wax again, so i can cut it proper. My colleague did the reblock, and she accidentally picked up one of the wax shavings of a polyp together with the appendix. I feel so bad, like she was trying to help me, but in the end, she got into trouble.

You can say, i'm always living in trepidation whenever im in the lab

Parting is such sweet sorrow

One of my oldest friends, Nick has already left for Sydney.
The scene at the departure gate seems all too familiar.
The goodbye hugs, the friends, the parents.
I never liked goodbyes.
Then, there was Nick unpacking his luggage, becuz it was a hefty 53kg, for which, he had to pay 600 bucks for excess baggage. Reminded me of the time when i was at Sydney. The damn luggage was 40kg. I panicked like fuck, because i estimated, and was expected to pay at least $800 for the excess weight. Thank god for the guys who allowed me to check in together with them, so the weight kinda distributed equally.
And there was also the pre-departure scare the the morning. I realised i couldnt close the luggage priort to leaving the house. I panicked again, and i removed one other jacket.

But all these departure scare and stress makes everything worth while. Imagine the tonnes of fun you'll have abroad without the parentals (or other half, if you're attached). You meet new ppl, try new things (like weed), visit places, and live an entirely different life on your own.
It is indeed a 360 revolution.
I would go through all srts of hassle, for a chance to be abroad on my own.
And i will fufil that wish, of saving just enough to do my masters overseas.

Right now, there are tonnes of things i have to do

1. get my shoes for graduation
2. figure out how to wear the graduation gown (i honestly have no clue)
3. pack the room
4. streak my hair

This is so depressing

These few days, i've been fretting quite abit over my weight gain (even though its probably only 2kg)
Pretty depressing man!
Well, cuz i havent exactly been running for 1.5 weeks. My right heel hurt so much. I'm starting to wonder if its those stupid clogshoes which ive been wearing at work, that caused me so much agony. Physical and mental agony.

wtf man.
this is horrible.
coupled with the PMS weight gain, i feel like my world is crashing on me.

I better go do something about it

Goodbye to my favourite pest (oxymoron), Nick, who's leaving for Sydney in a couple of hours time to study.
And im waiting for his sidekick Jeevan to come pick me up. And i still see that moron online!
You'll be missed nicky, and i want my Anzac biscuits when you're back in sunny island singapore!

Who's got the soccer fever?

"love me love me, say that you love me
fool me fool me, go one and fool me
i don't care 'bout anything but you"

I hope next time, i don't get a bf who's a hardcore soccer fan
Its excruciating to see how they're perpetually glued
to the tube when there's a soccer match.
Even if theres an armageddon, i still think they would continue watching.
And it's most annoying when they always wanna rush home,
just to catch a soccer match!
Or how they always appear to be in a state of trance/subconsciousness,
whenever you talk to them during a match
How they scream when there's a goal, or how they tell you their heart almost stopped,
when their favourite team almost scored an own goal

Men!

They are so queer
